Elizabeth Mackie
A briefcase filled with so many stories that they can no longer be confined to the closed case becomes the platform for a brief non-linear history. The narrative segments are silk-screened on silk organza and push through the wooden sides of the case. This project continues my interest in stories about women and focuses specifically on the variety of different relationships with a famous Philadelphian. In former work, the portrayal of women in well-known and more obscure oral narratives, fairy tales and legends became the basis for my work. Most recently, my work has focused on Rapunzel and the Selkie legends that became the inspiration for multiple sculptures.
