Combine the inventive spirit of Benjamin Franklin with the creative mind of an artist, pack them up in a wooden box, and what do you get?

A Case for Art!  Twenty-eight artists turn wooden briefcase forms (salvaged from an old Philadelphia briefcase factory) into unique artworks referencing a “suitcase.”  Only on view in Philadelphia, they are made from every imaginable material and provide endless surprises.  Expressing a true independence of spirit, the cases are thought-provoking and original.

Including visual references to the life and writings of Benjamin Franklin, the cases will be installed indoors in public and private venues accessible to the public from August 27- November 7, 2005. They will be displayed primarily in Center City and viewers will be able to find all the locations with the help of a colorful map available at tourist locations and at the individual venues.

For Franklinophiles (and anyone who loves a challenge), there will be an interactive “Benjamin Franklin Scavenger Hunt.” Signs will encourage viewers to search each work for a Franklin reference.  When they find it, they can write their response on a pre-addressed postcard to be mailed to Philadelphia Sculptors to be eligible for prizes.

Events accompanying the city-wide exhibition include a preview exhibition at Highwire Gallery from August 11-25, 2005 with a public reception Sunday, August 21, a reception at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at the University of the Arts for the Center City District Arts and Culture Week Gallery Night on Friday, October 28,  and a public auction of the cases at Wexler Gallery in Old City on Saturday, November 12, 2005.

Organized by Philadelphia Sculptors, “A Case for Art” is one of the events connected to the Ben Franklin 300 Philadelphia celebration.
