Grant McFarland & Anna Van Voorhis
The headwaters of the Delaware River are located in the Catskill mountains in New York State. As it runs its 419-mile course from near Hancock, New York to the mouth of the Delaware Bay, the river drains water from five states and passes through the cities of Trenton, NJ; Camden, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; andWilmington, DE. Continuum is an abstracted representation of the river, a microcosm of the waterway’s verdant potential, constrained as it is by human influence. The river is a continuous mass of life, connected from its headwaters all the way down to the Atlantic Ocean.In this facsimile, the land and river are reversed. The two mirrored sections of undulating wooden slats form the river banks while the body of the river is filled with tussock sedge, a native wetland grass. Continuum floats in the very same body of water it describes, subject to the whims of its currents.
About the Artists
Grant McFarland is a sculptor and maker of messes, food, furniture and other things as needed. His work uses interactions between the built and natural environments and their cast-offs to navigate notions of place and memory. He is especially interested in the way objects absorb and react to the inflections of anthropocentric time.
Grant is an MFA candidate at the University of Minnesota. He currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after spending time in Washington, DC, upstate New York, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has shown at The Hillyer in Washington DC, VisArts Center in Hyattsville, MD, the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum in Havre de Grace, MD, the Quarter Gallery in Minneapolis, MN, and the Cooper Gallery in Dundee, Scotland.
Anna Van Voorhis wants to get her hands on everything. She works with textiles, plants, paper, wood, cyanotype, and performance, among other media, to explore the world around her. She is currently preoccupied with attempts to cultivate her green thumb and valiant efforts to document the fleeting impressions left by volume and time.
Anna received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Minnesota in 2019 and her B.A. in Studio Arts from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 2014. She currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she works as the Training and Fabrication Technician at the Weissman Foundry. She has shown work at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery in Minneapolis, MN, at the Junior Varsity Artist Collective in Chicago, IL and at the Art Loft Gallery in Madison, WI. She was an artist in residence at the Milchhof Atelier in Berlin, Germany.
