In cooperation with the Galleries at Moore, PS is presenting “5 into 1” at Moore College of Art and Design. at 20th and the Parkway in Philadelphia. The exhibition will run from May 21 – June 18, 2011, with a special panel presentation, “Sculpture Today” on Sunday, May 22 from 1:30 – 2:45 pm. An opening reception will follow from 3:15 – 5:30 pm.

Curated by two 2010 “5 into 1” participants, Emma Irvin , a BFA graduate of Moore, and Anna Romaniuk, a BFA graduate of UArts, this year’s show continues the edginess and provocative qualities that have been characteristics of previous exhibitions.

The participating colleges and the students selected from each one are:

Moore College of Art and Design - Kelly McGovern and Laurel Patterson
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts - Tyler Kline and Tom Yurkovic
The University of the Arts - Tyler Held and Colin O’Neill
Tyler School of Art - Maxi Eisenmann and James Shomo
University of Pennsylvania - Rachel Eschenbach and Jessica Vaughn

At 1:30 pm, Paul Hubbard, Moore Graduate Program Manager in Studio Art, will moderate the panel "Sculpture Today." Cutting-edge artists Jordan Griska, Joseph Leroux, and Sharyn O'Mara will speak about their work and its relationship to contemporary issues in sculpture.

Jordan Griska, a 2011 West Prize Finalist and CFEVA Career Development Program Fellow, earned his BFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009 and already has achieved a significant exhibition record, including shows at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ, and at many local venues, including Moore, PAFA, the Esther Klein Gallery, and Eastern State Penitentiary.

Joseph Leroux currently teaches sculpture at Moore. Originally focused on music, his career changed direction when a sculpture class at SUNY Potsdam inspired him to embrace sculpture. He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a MFA in 2010. His current work combines images, objects, and performances into one single practice that defies traditional art categories.

Sharyn O'Mara is Associate Professor and Head of Glass at Tyler School of Art. Her practice over the past several years includes sculpture, installation, video, and drawing. Much of her work is grounded in a profound interest in language and its broader implications on culture and context. She has exhibited in the US and abroad, and currently is working on a series of drawings entitled "Working Dogs" that incorporate GPS technology and the hand.

The public is invited to attend the presentation and the opening reception which follows, from 3:15 – 5:30 pm. One student will be selected by Jordan Griska to receive the “Best in Show” award.
