Artist Statement


The live model is my subject. I observe how people compose themselves as they express something beyond their mere anatomy. Besides anatomy, figures embody metaphors from outside the body, which transend the body's geometry. The reclining pose gives the figure a context, such as the horizontal plinth, within which larger themes can be explored (i.e. the formal issues associated with landscapes) and permits the figures reponse to gravity to carry powerful emotional states. The abstract element of each piece (again the horizontal plinth) plays an active role in defining the space inhabited by the
figure, by sharply delineating the dimensions of the width and depth.
These latest pieces reflect this interest.
