My work represents psychological opposing forces in conflict such as male-female, order-chaos, inside-outside, fulfilled-unfulfilled, or old relationships versus new. Steel is my choice of material because it presents resistance yet flows like liquid when heated. The danger in processing steel creates an urgency of the immediate experience. It is significant that my work reduces the factory-made steel to raw, hand-made art. It is important in the final product to show the steps taken in the process of making it. Moreover, I allow accident to play an important role in process; I prefer the unfinished look with rough edges, unsmoothed surfaces. and the untreated color of steel. These preferences along with others infuse "human dignity" into the steel during the process of creating art. The empty spaces and multiple layers of metal represent the complexities of human nature and the struggle against natural and cultural forces in daily life. This struggle ultimately occurs on the psychological level within each person. Within that context movement through time and space become critical. A person's history is in constant motion within the personal psychological space. My work is an attempt to materialize this motion and to freeze a moment of psychological time in material space. Finally, my work is my attempt to come to grips with these ever-present forces and to reach a positive, creative resolution. Telephone |
