Artist Statement

Explore and Evolve

Subtractive carving is a metaphor for exploring consciousness. Stripping away masses and layers that don't belong reveals the sculpture hidden within. When I eliminate nonessential activities and just carve my energy is focused. My goal when carving is not just the finished carving but also seeing into the heart of life and finding better ways to work and live. I favor the timelessness of hand tools and the sustainability of found materials. My carvings take the shape of human figures, often female, as carvings always have. Our bodies are both intimately familiar and sources of endless mystery.
