Artist Statement
My goal is to create sculpture that is basically abstract in design, but which has a stimulating thematic undercurrent. I specialize in welded metal sculpture consisting of painted or stainless steel, chrome and copper. I frequently use found objects that have interesting cultural or historical value. For example, I have made use of a two-person logging saw (in CELEBRATION), chromium bumpers from 1960's/1970"s automobiles (in OURO PRETO AND REBIRTH), a rim from an antique carriage wheel (in POT OF GOLD…), and tongs from an ice-house in Maine (WATER AND WIND). In many of my pieces, I have incorporated semi-precious stones, such as amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, malachite, lapis lazuli and geodes. These brilliant stones blend harmoniously with the varied geometrical patterns of the metal. I have also used objects such as driftwood and fossils to dramatize the thematic content of the sculpture.
